MaLinda Howes was inspired by her mom’s love of stained glass to learn the art of making it. She took a class 20 years ago and hasn’t touched another craft since. She has a love of conserving and repairing existing stained glass, and creates custom designs. Her technique reflects Frank Lloyd Wright styling; dragonflies and flowers are consistently part of her designs.

Howes moved from Bedford Mass., to Georgetown in 2010 to be nearer to her family, where she had a workshop making and teaching the stained-glass craft.

Classes will be offered beginning in July, for two hours once a week, for five weeks. Participants will use her tools and purchase glass from her library while learning from her vast knowledge and experience.  “Before students purchase tools of their own, I want them to know if they like the craft before making an investment,” Howes said.

At a price of $95 for the five-week session, the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening classes are filling quickly. Participants will purchase glass from her vast collection.  She carries the full line of Spectrum glass. “It’s the easiest glass to teach with because it cuts like butter.” Specialty art glass is also available. If students decide to continue with the the craft after completing the class, she invites them to work in the shop with their personal tools for a reasonable fee.

Glasshowes is also inviting guest artists in once a month to teach a craft. The first, a sign-painting class, will be Thursday, July 19.

Everything at Glasshowes is handcrafted. In addition to the workshop, 20 artisans offer items in her upstairs gallery. Artists may participate in the gift gallery if their items  are handmade in the USA.

Howes took over the building at 140 E. Market St. in Georgetown where she will create and teach. Glasshowes is open Tuesday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
